Vishnu and Lakshmi on Seshasai
Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism
This is a popular image of the blue god, Vishnu at his abode-Vaikuntha. He is seen being worshipped by his consort, Goddess Lakshmi as he rests on Adisesha (the thousand headed serpent) leaving aside his attributes. The background is filled with patterns in silver suggesting the primordial waters. The deep red border offers a striking contrast to the brown in the background and the muted colour palette.
Delicate contour lines, fine stippling work and subtle colours are the defining features of a Guler painting.
